There are several factors you should expect to impact the rate of pay. Once you've figured out the basic pay rate, see the following information to help you adjust the rate as needed.
Amount of child care
Do you need a caregiver full time, part time, or just for occasional help?
If it's part-time, is it for the same days and times each week?
Is the job during the week, on weekends or some of each?
Location
Major metropolitan areas tend to have higher child care rates than rural areas.
Suburbs can also have much higher child care rates than rural areas, especially if they serve a large commuter population and are near a major city.
Number of children
Keeping an eye on 1 child is a lot different than watching 2 or 3 or more kids. Pay should reflect this. Your sitter or nanny needs to control a larger group, deal with kids interacting with each other, and be more aware of group dynamics than if they're watching 1 child.
Additional responsibilities
Many babysitters and nannies are happy to help with chores, as long as it doesn't interfere with their caregiving.
Asking your child caregiver to help with laundry or pick up groceries are definitely tasks requiring extra pay. Expect to pay at least another $1 - $2 per hour in addition to the basic rate.
Basic tidying up and getting the kids a snack are usually included in your basic rate - just be sure your babysitter or nanny knows what your expectations are.
Transportation
Is your child caregiver required to drive the kids all over town for lessons or play dates? Are they using your car or theirs?
If they're using their car, you'll want to offer extra compensation for the gas she uses while driving the kids. If they're using your car be sure you provide them with gas money if the tank needs filling. Some parents offer their child caregiver mileage compensation if they're commuting a long distance.
Experience
Experienced child caregivers get paid more than those with less experience. Paying more for experience can get you a sitter who can better meet your child care needs--and you get peace of mind too.
Qualifications
If you have a newborn or twins (or triplets!), you'll want a babysitter or nanny that has specific experience to match your needs. Expect to pay more per hour than the basic rate in your local area. It's worth it.

My name is Jasmin, I am an ECE, I have my bachelors degree in Early Childhood Studies from University along with two separate ECE diplomas. I have 10+ years of experience with children from classrooms to home care. I have had 5 years of full time experience as a nanny to 4 children. My most recent position was a home educator and support worker for a child with special needs. Throughout the day we enjoyed gardening, crafts, cooking and baking new healthy recipes, going on walks and enjoying a lot of outdoor time. We also enjoyed planning weekly trips to the local library, swimming and other recreational activities. I love to sit down and fully engage in the children's play and follow their interests and inquiries. Doing so helps me plan what activities do introduce throughout our days to follow. I am looking to either invite other children into my home, providing a safe and welcoming place for them to learn and play, or providing care in your home. I am a mom of two beautiful little girls, 4 and 9 months. My 9 month old would make an excellent playmate she is very friendly and loves other children. I am CPR and first aid certified and hold a valid police check as well.

8 years experience
Hello! I'm Chanthe, a 26 year old passionate early years teacher from the UK, with over 8 years of invaluable childcare experience, gained both in daycare settings and as a dedicated nanny. My journey led me to a delightful year as a live-in nanny in Toronto, providing full time nanny and housekeeping services for a wonderful family and their toddler. Currently, I'm joyfully engaged in two part-time roles, a lively 4-year-old and siblings aged 4 and 8. However I am looking for more/weekend hours!
My approach is rooted in high energy, genuine care, and unwavering support. I thrive in tailoring activities and experiences to meet individual needs, with a strong emphasis on learning through play and other methods crucial for child development and early brain growth. With an early years teaching qualification and a BSc in Genetics, I possess a unique blend of educational and scientific insights.
I'm more than willing to extend a helping hand to your family with whatever you require, whether that is schooling, cooking, or housekeeping – and I am also paediatric first aid trained.
